Südstadt Center's closure sparks protests as legal hurdles delay reopening
Südstadt Center has remained shut since February after severe fire safety breaches forced its closure. Residents have now protested for the sixth time, demanding its reopening. Despite growing frustration, the city's ability to act is limited by the owner's refusal to invest in repairs or upgrades. The building's problems were first highlighted last year by the lower building authority. Inspections revealed critical fire hazards, with warnings that elderly shoppers would struggle to escape in an emergency. By February, conditions had worsened, leaving the city no choice but to close the centre entirely.
Since then, vandalism has spiked at the empty site. Thieves targeting copper cables were recently caught, adding to the deterioration. The city has assigned a staff member to engage with potential investors, hoping to find a solution. One investor has even proposed building a smaller replacement nearby if the current centre cannot reopen. Lord Mayor Dr. Alexander Vogt attended the latest protest but could not promise a quick resolution. While the city is pushing hard for the centre's return, legal constraints prevent it from forcing the owner to act. Without cooperation, the future of Südstadt Center remains uncertain.
The centre's closure has left residents without a key local facility. If no agreement is reached, the proposed smaller replacement may become the only option. For now, the city continues to seek investors while dealing with the fallout from the prolonged shutdown.
