Thuringia's Leader Calls for Systematic Return of Migrants to Syria
Thuringia's Minister-President Mario Voigt (CDU) has advocated for the systematic return of migrants from Germany to Syria. With approximately 951,406 Syrians residing in Germany as of August 2025, around 920 are obligated to leave and lack a tolerated status. Voluntary returns are on the rise, with government-supported returns peaking at 529 in September 2025.
Voigt, supported by Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU), believes that returns are the right approach for migrants. He argues that efforts should focus on enabling people to rebuild their homeland in Syria. The return process is planned to begin progressively, with funding for voluntary returnees. However, political debate exists about the timing and conditions due to Syria's destruction and security concerns.
Voigt's stance on migrant returns to Syria reflects the growing trend of voluntary repatriation, with a record 529 government-supported returns in September 2025. Despite debates on the timing and conditions, the process aims to support Syrians in rebuilding their homeland.
