Trigema founder Wolfgang Grupp opens up after suicide attempt in 2025

Wolfgang Grupp, the founder of German clothing company Trigema, attempted suicide in mid-2025 after struggling with depression. The 83-year-old businessman had handed over day-to-day control of the firm to his children the previous year. Since the incident, he has spoken openly about his regret and the overwhelming support he received.

Grupp’s depression began after he transferred leadership of Trigema to his children, Bonita Grupp and Wolfgang Grupp Jr., in 2024. Despite stepping back, he remained a central figure in the company’s culture, still offering advice and guidance. His children later described him as a defining presence in the business.

In the summer of 2025, Grupp attempted to take his own life. He later called the failed attempt an act of 'divine providence' and admitted he deeply regretted his decision. After the incident, he surrendered his hunting licence and placed his revolver in the custody of his son. Recovering from the ordeal, Grupp received over 2,000 messages from people who had faced similar struggles. Though he continues medical treatment, he still deals with lingering effects, including hearing problems. Despite these challenges, he remains actively involved in Trigema, supporting the business alongside his children.

Grupp’s suicide attempt led to an outpouring of support from those who related to his experience. He has since emphasised his wish to move forward while staying connected to the company he built. His children now manage daily operations, but his influence within Trigema endures.
