Trump administration targets job protections for senior health officials
The Trump administration is pushing ahead with plans to strip job protections from hundreds of senior health department officials. These employees, classified under the GS-15 grade, could soon face dismissal without the usual safeguards for career civil servants. The proposed change targets high-ranking staff at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). These roles typically include senior technical experts, managers, policy advisors, and supervisors. Under the new rules, they would lose their current protections, meaning they could be fired at will rather than only for proven misconduct with appeal rights.
The move is part of a broader overhaul aimed at giving the president greater control over hiring and firing across the federal workforce. Up to 50,000 career employees could eventually be affected. At HHS, the first wave of reclassifications will focus on hundreds of GS-15 positions, with further groups expected to follow later.
The administration has long argued for reducing the size of the federal workforce and increasing its accountability to the White House. However, unions representing federal workers have already taken legal action, filing challenges in federal court to block the policy.
