Trump and China's leadership seek stability in high-stakes Beijing talks

US President Donald Trump has concluded a state visit to Beijing after meeting with China’s leadership. The talks marked a rare moment of dialogue following years of rising tensions. Both sides described the discussions as a step toward stabilising their complex relationship. The two presidents agreed to work on a 'constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability'. This comes after prolonged disagreements over trade, security, and regional influence. Despite differences, they stressed the need to avoid conflict and improve mutual understanding.

Key areas for cooperation were highlighted, including technology, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence. These sectors could become the foundation for future joint efforts. However, sticking points remain, particularly over Taiwan and economic competition. China has repeatedly criticised US arms sales to Taiwan, a region it claims as its own. In response, Washington pledged to adjust its supply of offensive weapons to the island. Meanwhile, American officials raised concerns about Chinese exports undercutting US jobs. Trump called the visit 'very successful and unforgettable'. Analysts noted that China’s measured approach—described as acting like an 'adult' in diplomacy—helped ease tensions. Both nations acknowledged that open communication is essential, even if they cannot resolve all disputes immediately.

The meeting did not erase long-standing disagreements, but it set a framework for ongoing talks. Both countries have committed to avoiding confrontation and respecting each other’s positions. Future discussions will determine whether this shift leads to lasting cooperation or merely a temporary easing of tensions.
