U.S. Slaps 50% Tariffs on India, Drawing Sharp Criticism from Experts

The United States has imposed a 50% tariff on Indian exports, a move that has drawn criticism from prominent voices like Fareed Zakaria. This action, seen as a departure from decades of U.S. efforts to strengthen ties with India, has sparked debate and concern about the future of their relationship.

Zakaria, a renowned journalist and political commentator, has slammed the U.S. tariffs, stating they 'make no sense'. He argues that India, with its vast scale, holds immense potential to replace China in global manufacturing, particularly in consumer electronics and pharmaceuticals. However, the U.S. policies under Trump have undone years of work to draw India closer.

The tariffs, imposed due to India's continued purchase of Russian oil and failed trade negotiations, have further strained relations. India now faces the highest tariffs imposed by the U.S. on any country. Zakaria laments the lack of clarity from U.S. policymakers regarding India, highlighting the shift from India being among the top three most pro-American countries a year ago to now feeling targeted.

The 50% tariff on Indian goods, coupled with the lack of clear U.S. policy towards India, has raised concerns about the future of their bilateral relationship. As India's potential in global manufacturing grows, the U.S. may need to reassess its approach to maintain strong ties with the world's largest democracy.
