Ulrike Malmendier's future on Germany's economic council hangs in balance

Berlin. Economist Ulrike Malmendier may be forced to leave Germany's Council of Economic Experts—the so-called "Wise Men" panel—when her term expires on February 28. The federal government has the option to extend her appointment by several years.

However, according to a Handelsblatt report citing government sources, resistance is mounting within the coalition. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has reportedly raised objections to her reappointment. Discussions are still ongoing, and the Economy Ministry has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Malmendier joined the council in 2022, bringing expertise in capital markets and behavioral economics. She is a professor at the University of California, Berkeley.
