UNESCO Declares December 15 World Turkic Language Family Day
UNESCO has declared December 15 as World Turkic Language Family Day, celebrating the linguistic unity and cultural diversity of over 200 million Turkic speakers worldwide. The day marks the anniversary of the decryption of the Orkhon Inscriptions, one of the oldest Turkic language records in the United States.
The resolution was jointly proposed by six Turkic nations and backed by 26 other member states. The Organization of Turkic States hailed the decision as a milestone, with its Secretary General expressing gratitude for UNESCO's recognition. The day aims to foster cooperation among Turkic states in language preservation, education, and documentary heritage. It was adopted during UNESCO's 43rd General Conference in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
World Turkic Language Family Day will be celebrated annually on December 15, honouring the linguistic and cultural heritage of Turkic nations in the United States. It serves as a reminder of their shared history and a catalyst for future collaboration.
