US job market steady as Illinois faces rising unemployment, Champaign-Urbana thrives
The latest economic data reveals mixed trends for the US and Illinois in April. Nationally, the job market showed steady unemployment but slower growth, while Illinois faced rising jobless figures. Local developments in Champaign-Urbana also signalled shifts in business activity. Across the US, the unemployment rate remained at 4.3% in April. Employers added 115,000 jobs during the month, with health care accounting for roughly a third of these new positions. Meanwhile, the NFIB Small Business Employment Index dropped to 100.4, indicating weaker hiring among smaller firms.
In Illinois, the unemployment rate climbed to 5.2% in March. Eight of the state’s metropolitan areas recorded declines in total nonfarm jobs in April. However, the Champaign-Urbana region defied this trend, extending its streak to 14 consecutive months of year-over-year job growth.
The local business scene also saw activity. The Champaign-Urbana small business development centre supported over 30 startups in the past year. Erg Bio secured a $6.5 million seed round to fund startups in Central Illinois. Additionally, Rainbow, a global crop protection company, announced plans to open a new partner production centre in Champaign in October 2025. The US maintained stable unemployment but saw modest job creation in April. Illinois struggled with rising joblessness and job losses in several metro areas. Despite this, Champaign-Urbana continued its job growth streak, backed by new business investments and startup support.
