Velbert guarantees school spots for every child by new academic year
Velbert Secondary School Registrations Complete: City Releases Overview of Results and Next Steps
First Registration Phase Results (February 2026) From February 23 to 25, all fourth-grade students had the opportunity to enroll in a secondary school. Both of Velbert's comprehensive schools (Gesamtschulen), as well as Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium and Nikolaus-Ehlen-Gymnasium, saw particularly high demand, requiring additional capacity to be created.
Nikolaus-Ehlen-Gymnasium was able to accept all registered children after coordinating with school authorities to open an extra class. This even allowed the school to accommodate students who had initially been turned away from Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium.
At Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium, five children could not be admitted—four of them from Velbert.
Gesamtschule Velbert-Mitte was unable to offer places to 50 children in the first registration round, including 44 from Velbert. Meanwhile, Gesamtschule Waldschlösschen had 59 children without immediate placement, 34 of them Velbert residents.
Second Registration Phase Results (March 2026) A second registration window opened on March 9 and 10, with a notable increase in applications at the city's intermediate secondary schools (Realschulen). Realschule Kastanienallee will welcome 95 new students for the upcoming school year, while Martin-Luther-King-Schule will take in 45. More children are expected to join before the term begins, including those transitioning from specialized support programs into regular classes and late arrivals to Velbert. To meet demand, Realschule Kastanienallee has also added an extra class. By the start of the new school year, every child will have a place at a suitable school.
Next Steps In the upcoming meeting of the Committee for Schools, Education, and Culture, the school administration will present final registration figures, along with school-type recommendations and students' places of residence.
