Vietnam and India deepen strategic ties with high-level diplomatic visit

Vietnam and India are preparing for a high-level visit as the two nations celebrate a decade of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and State President Tô Lâm will travel to India soon. The trip aims to strengthen ties and explore new areas of cooperation between the long-standing allies. The relationship between Vietnam and India has deepened significantly since 2016. What began as a traditional friendship has grown into a broad strategic partnership, covering defence, nuclear safety, and infrastructure. Both countries now collaborate closely in regional security, including United Nations peacekeeping efforts.

Maritime security has become a key focus, with joint work in search and rescue operations and a stronger presence in strategic waters. India’s SAGAR initiative (Security and Growth for All in the Region) highlights Vietnam’s role as a vital partner in Southeast Asia. Despite progress, challenges remain—particularly the lack of direct road and rail links. Experts like Prof. Anmol Mukhia of South Asian University note that better connectivity could further boost cooperation. The upcoming visit is expected to reinforce political trust and encourage dialogue on shared policy goals. Both nations are also aligning their long-term plans, prioritising digital transformation and economic growth. The visit will provide an opportunity to review cooperation and explore deeper strategic ties.

The visit by Vietnam’s top leader comes at a time when both countries are expanding their partnership. Discussions will likely focus on security, trade, and infrastructure projects. Strengthening these ties could shape regional stability and economic collaboration in the years ahead.
