Waldkirch overhauls childcare with new centres and flexible hours
Waldkirch is set to adjust its childcare services with several key changes on the horizon. The city council will soon vote on a new planning framework, while daycare centres and kindergartens prepare for expansions and reorganisations. The city council will decide on a demand-based planning framework on May 20, 2026. This comes as Waldkirch seeks to address growing childcare needs, particularly for children over three.
The Ranunkel forest kindergarten has already made adjustments. It now accepts children as young as two and has split one of its groups into two smaller mixed-age units. Meanwhile, the Stadtrain nature kindergarten will reduce its opening hours to 30 hours per week and will not add a third outdoor group.
New facilities are also in the works. The St. Carolus am Wald daycare centre’s new building, set to open in early 2027, will include a crèche for infants and more extended-hours places. Regenbogen daycare will move into the refurbished Bruderhaus buildings after renovations.
Currently, Waldkirch offers 310 spots for children under three. However, additional capacity is still required for older children. The upcoming council vote will shape how Waldkirch manages childcare demand in the coming years. With new buildings, reorganised groups, and adjusted opening times, the city aims to provide more flexible and accessible services for families.
