Ballot Errors Found in Weiden's City Council Election—But Mail-In Votes Remain Valid

Some of the ballots for the upcoming city council election in Weiden in der Oberpfalz contain errors, officials have confirmed. However, mail-in voting materials already issued will retain their validity, the city announced.

The mistake was discovered after a tip prompted an administrative review. Investigators found that the candidate lists for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the Green Party had incorrect ordering for individual nominees on the ballot.

In coordination with the Bavarian Interior Ministry and the government of the Upper Palatinate region, authorities decided that corrected ballots will be provided starting Monday for any remaining mail-in requests as well as for in-person voting on March 8. All previously distributed mail-in ballots will still be valid. Voters who still have their ballots at home may request a replacement if they wish.

For those who have already mailed in their ballots, voters have the option to voluntarily invalidate their submission. In such cases, new mail-in materials with corrected ballots will be issued.

To ensure all mail-in voters are informed, the city administration will send out a notification in the coming days.
