Wolfenbüttel's Youth Council Proposes a Vibrant Car-Free Sunday for 2023
Wolfenbüttel’s Youth Council has put forward plans for another car-free Sunday in 2023. The proposal, backed by the city administration, aims to turn a central street into a lively hub for residents. If approved, the event would feature markets, sports, and live entertainment.
The Youth Council has chosen Dr. Heinrich-Jasper-Straße as the location for the car-free event. Two possible dates, June 7 or June 21, have been suggested. Organisers want the street closed from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with activities running from noon until 5 p.m.
The council envisions a day filled with club stalls, a flea market, and spaces for music, games, and sports. The event aligns with the city’s broader goals of boosting sustainable transport, improving the city centre’s appeal, and encouraging community involvement. To fund the project, the Youth Council has asked the city to cover the estimated €6,000 cost. The administration has already shown strong support, calling it a worthwhile investment in the students’ volunteer efforts. The next step is a discussion by the Youth and Social Affairs Committee on February 19.
The proposal will now go before the committee for review. If approved, the car-free Sunday would offer residents a chance to enjoy a traffic-free street with various activities. The city sees the event as a way to promote sustainability and strengthen community spirit.
