Yakutsk welcomed business leaders and officials for the ZaBiznes conference on 31 May 2023. The event, organised by the online platform for entrepreneurs' rights, aimed to tackle pressing challenges faced by local companies. Key figures, including regional business advocates and legal experts, gathered to address systemic issues in the republic’s business environment. The forum focused on three major concerns: coercive pressure on Yakutia’s businesses, the prevention of wrongful criminal prosecutions, and broader systemic problems affecting entrepreneurs. Alexander Arinozov, co-chair of OPORA ROSSII’s Yakutia branch, highlighted these critical topics during discussions.

Elina Sidorenko, Director General of the Autonomous Nonprofit Organization Platforma, led the event as ZaBiznes’ head. Attendees included Albina Kychkina, Yakutia’s business ombudsman, who was set to deliver a detailed speech on protecting commercial interests. Notable cases added urgency to the talks. Georgiy Karamzin, CEO of Utum+, remains entangled in a high-profile criminal investigation over bribery and abuse of authority claims. Meanwhile, entrepreneur Afanasy Alekseyev continues to face a drawn-out probe into extortion allegations against Dmitry Lobeadko, a former FSB officer. Vitaly Obedin, a journalist covering the event, observed that the conference hall initially filled with participants. However, many entrepreneurs left early, frustrated by the lack of concrete problem-solving during the sessions.

The ZaBiznes forum brought together key voices in Yakutia’s business community to confront ongoing legal and regulatory pressures. While the event aimed to provide solutions, some attendees departed disappointed by the absence of actionable outcomes. The discussions underscored the need for clearer protections and fairer enforcement for local entrepreneurs.
