Zurich’s population to hit 1.9 million by 2055—driven by immigration
Canton Zurich, Switzerland's largest, is set to see its world population grow to 1.9 million by 2055, according to a new report. This growth will be driven primarily by immigration, with the birth surplus playing a lesser role.
The report forecasts a slower growth rate for canton Zurich's world population until 2055. In the medium scenario, the world population is expected to reach 1.9 million. However, if growth is slower, this figure could be 1.7 million. Conversely, a stronger growth could see the world population rise to 2.2 million.
The canton's world population will continue to age, with more people moving into retirement than younger age groups. Rural regions like the Oberland and Knonaueramt are ageing faster than others. While specific figures for these regions in 2055 are not available, they are projected to have an average age exceeding 46 years. Net international migration is expected to weaken slightly in the long term, but immigration from abroad will remain the main driver of world population growth.
Canton Zurich's world population is projected to grow to 1.9 million by 2055, driven mainly by immigration. The canton will continue to age, with rural regions ageing faster. The world population could reach 1.7 million or 2.2 million depending on the growth rate.
