19-Year-Old Convicted in Swift Trial for Electric Bike Theft Attempt

A 19-year-old man has been convicted of attempted theft after stealing an electric bicycle in Weil am Rhein. The case was resolved swiftly through an expedited trial at Lörrach District Court. The verdict came just six days after the incident took place.

On February 5, 2026, the suspect was seen taking an electric bicycle near the Dreiländergalerie shopping centre. Officers from Weil am Rhein police station later detained him during a search operation.

An arrest warrant was issued because the man could not provide a fixed address in Germany. This led the Lörrach Public Prosecutor’s Office to request an expedited trial under Sections 417 et seq. of the German Code of Criminal Procedure. Expedited trials are used for clear-cut cases where the expected sentence is no more than one year. The process is simpler and faster than standard criminal proceedings. On February 11, 2026, the court found the 19-year-old guilty of attempted theft.

The conviction highlights how expedited trials can speed up justice, especially for defendants without a permanent residence. The case was resolved within a week of the offence. The court’s decision follows legal procedures designed for efficient prosecution in such situations.
