A59 bridge construction sparks fierce local backlash amid tunnel dispute

Construction has started on a crumbling A59 bridge after a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony. The project is part of a larger 6.7-kilometre highway expansion that has sparked fierce opposition from locals. Residents in the Meiderich district have repeatedly protested The city has demanded a tunnel solution for the highway, arguing it would reduce disruption. But Autobahn GmbH dismissed the idea, citing an extra €2.3 billion in costs and a much longer build time. The company also claimed tunnels cannot safely handle hazardous materials or heavy freight, an argument the city’s transport group, Link, called baseless.

Residents have raised concerns about noise barriers blocking sunlight for most of the day. Autobahn GmbH responded by highlighting planned noise reduction measures, though these have done little to ease public anger. Federal authorities are now weighing whether to push ahead with the current plans, risking potential legal action from the city. The highway expansion remains deeply unpopular, with protests continuing as construction moves forward. Locals argue the project will harm their quality of life, while officials insist the upgrades are necessary for traffic flow and safety.

The dispute leaves the project in limbo, with the city threatening legal steps if federal plans proceed. Autobahn GmbH maintains its position, ruling out a tunnel and defending its noise mitigation efforts. For now, construction continues—but so does the resistance from affected communities.
