Afghan man detained on German train over expired residence permit
Federal police detained an Afghan man during a routine patrol on a local train between Neudietendorf and Erfurt Central Station. The 36-year-old, who failed to provide identification, was later found to have an expired residence permit and was wanted for deportation proceedings. The incident began on Wednesday when officers conducted checks on the rail link. Upon questioning, the man could not show any valid ID. He then admitted to being an Afghan national.
A search uncovered an expired residence permit with a summer 2025 expiry date. Authorities confirmed he was already subject to an active deportation order. He spent Wednesday night in federal police custody. Today, a court upheld the detention order, and he was transferred to the deportation detention facility in Arnstadt. The immigration authority has been notified of the case for further action.
The man now remains in Arnstadt's deportation detention centre. His case will proceed under the relevant immigration regulations. No further details on similar arrests in 2023 have been released.
