Freiburg's New Synagogue Fence Balances Security and Transparent Memorial Design

Freiburg will soon install a protective fence around its synagogue. The project follows years of requests from the local Jewish Community and aims to improve security for worshippers. The barrier, designed with transparency in mind, will also serve as the foundation for a future memorial.

The decision to build the fence came after extensive talks between the city and Jewish leaders. Funding for the €120,000 project will come from both the Central Council of Jews in Germany and Freiburg’s municipal budget. The council is contributing €27,500, while the city covers the remaining costs.

The barrier will stand at roughly 1.75 metres high and feature a gate shaped like a menorah. Its transparent design ensures visibility while providing protection. The Caritas Association of Freiburg will manage the planning and construction. Mayor Martin Horn emphasised the importance of safeguarding Jewish life but admitted the need for such measures was deeply concerning. The Jewish Community has welcomed the fence, calling it a necessary step for safety. In time, the structure will incorporate foundation stones from the old synagogue, forming part of a dignified memorial.

Work on the fence will move forward under the supervision of the Caritas Association. Once complete, it will enhance security while preserving the synagogue’s connection to the public. The memorial aspect will also honour the history of the former building through its design.
