After 45 Years as Mayor, Castaneda Faces an Uncertain Political Future
Attilio Savioni, the long-serving mayor of Castaneda in Graubünden, has held office for 45 years. As his term ends next year, speculation mounts about his successor, with no clear candidate emerging yet.
Savioni, now 79, took office at the age of just 35. He never anticipated serving for such an extended period. His longevity is attributed to his passion for public service and engagement with the community. Savioni's commitment has been exceptional, even compared to the average local authority head's term of two to three years, with a maximum of 16 years.
Savioni's record is remarkable, even surpassing Edwin Zeiter's 48-year tenure in Bister, Valais. However, larger municipalities often impose term limits, a measure adopted by around 40% of Graubünden's municipalities. Castaneda, with its population of 285, has not yet implemented such limits.
Savioni's elections have often been uncontested, reflecting his popularity and the community's satisfaction with his leadership. Despite his extensive service, he has not ruled out running for office again in 2023.
As Attilio Savioni's tenure as mayor of Castaneda nears its end, the municipality looks towards the future. While no successor has been named, the community awaits the outcome of the 2023 election results, which may see a new face or a continuation of Savioni's long-standing leadership.
