Alberto Coutinho's legacy lives on in Newark's community and politics
Alberto Coutinho Coutinho first entered politics in 1997 when he joined the New Jersey Assembly. He later returned to serve the 29th Legislative District from 2008 until his resignation in 2013. His departure followed a guilty plea for misusing funds from his family's charity.
His influence extended beyond politics. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka highlighted his efforts in job creation, expanding recreational spaces, and reforming workforce re-entry programmes. Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo also praised his commitment to youth soccer, particularly the Ironbound Soccer Club. Since Coutinho's death in 2023, the club has grown significantly, establishing a formal nonprofit structure, securing more local funding, and launching academy programmes with over 200 young participants by 2025. Colleagues and friends remembered him fondly. East Ward Councilmember Michael Silva called Coutinho his guiding light, a problem-solver who inspired others. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker described him as a great leader and friend. The Portuguese Day Festival in Newark, founded by Coutinho's family, remains a testament to his cultural legacy in the community.
Coutinho's death marks the end of a career that shaped local politics and community projects. His work in youth sports, job development, and public service continues to benefit Newark residents. The initiatives he supported, now stronger and more structured, reflect his enduring impact on the city.
