Arnsberg’s New Mascot, the DemokraTIER, Takes Flight with Youth-Led Democracy
Arnsberg's young residents have played a significant role in shaping the city's future, with the introduction of a new mascot, the DemokraTIER. The initiative, a collaborative effort by various city offices and schools, saw 1,822 students vote for their favourite design from twelve submissions.
The DemokraTIER project aimed to engage young residents in democracy and participation. A citywide creative competition among primary and special-needs schools resulted in twelve designs. Fourth-grader Nicole Block from the Rote Schule municipal primary school in Neheim won with her design of a reclining cat with wings. The winning design was presented to Arnsberg Mayor Ralf Paul Bittner, who praised the children's participation and the mascot's potential for promoting acceptance and understanding.
The DemokraTIER will accompany the mayor to various engagements and appear at events focusing on children's issues. It embodies the key aspects of a democracy that protects children’s development and freedom. Arnsberg's residents, particularly its youth, are regularly involved in shaping the city's future, as seen in this initiative.
