Berlin. After Bulgaria's parliamentary election, the German government is pushing for swift formation of a new administration.
Bulgaria's election delivers a landslide for Radev's alliance amid EU stability calls
"We hope that a stable government can be formed quickly in Sofia," a Foreign Ministry spokesperson told the dts news agency on Monday. "In these challenging times, the European Union needs reliable partners to tackle the many shared challenges we face together." With that in mind, he added, Germany is looking forward to the government-building process in Bulgaria.
When asked whether Berlin anticipated potential EU-level obstruction from election winner Rumen Radev—widely seen as pro-Russian—the spokesperson dismissed the question as purely speculative at this stage. "Fundamentally, we assume that, as in the past, it will be possible through dialogue with all our European partners to maintain a strong and united European stance, ensure a robust NATO, and support a defensible Ukraine."
In Sunday's vote, the alliance led by former President Radev secured a surprisingly decisive victory. With most ballots counted, it holds around 44.7% of the vote, likely giving it an absolute majority in parliament. The conservative GERB-SDS coalition came in second with roughly 13.4%, while the liberal-conservative PP-DB alliance followed in third with 12.7%.
