Elderly driver causes chaos after entering A2 highway the wrong way
Multiple callers reported to police via emergency services that a vehicle was traveling the wrong way on the A2 highway between the Bönen and Kamen-Bergkamen junctions, heading toward Hanover. Officers from the Kamen highway police station responded immediately.
On the nearly empty Hanover-bound carriageway, they soon spotted the vehicle's dipped headlights and slowed down. Using flashing blue lights, high beams, and their siren, they attempted—without success—to get the driver to stop. To avoid a head-on collision, the officers had to swerve and noticed an elderly woman behind the wheel.
To prevent further danger to other road users, the Hanover-bound lanes were temporarily closed near the Lünen-Süd junction. Additional units brought traffic between the two junctions to a complete standstill. Moments later, the car approached, decelerated, and finally came to a stop.
The driver was a 77-year-old woman from Neuenrade (Arnsberg district). When spoken to, she appeared disoriented in both time and place. Officers took her to the Kamen highway police station, where they attended to her. Her son, whom police had contacted, picked her up shortly afterward.
The vehicle was removed from the scene. The woman's driver's license was confiscated, and officers filed a report with the relevant licensing authority to assess her fitness to drive, as well as a criminal complaint for endangering road traffic.
