Arsonist targets Delmenhorst church in suspected hate attack on religious books
A church in Delmenhorst narrowly avoided serious damage after an arson attempt on Wednesday afternoon. An unknown person set fire to religious books inside the building on Brendelweg. The blaze was quickly put out, but police are now searching for witnesses. The incident took place when someone stacked hymnbooks and Bibles on a reading table and set them alight. Smoke from the fire was spotted by an organist practising inside the church. They immediately raised the alarm, and firefighters arrived to extinguish the flames before they spread.
Police have opened an investigation into the deliberate fire. The damage to the property is estimated at around €2,500. Authorities are asking anyone who saw suspicious behaviour near the church at the time to come forward with information.
The quick response prevented a larger disaster, but the motive behind the arson remains unclear. Investigators are reviewing evidence and appealing for public help to identify the person responsible.
