ASEAN prioritizes energy security with new Kuala Lumpur Declaration
Malaysia has called for faster action on energy security within ASEAN. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted the need for stronger cooperation to ensure reliable and resilient energy supplies. His remarks came as member states reaffirmed their commitment to strategic autonomy and sustainable growth. At a recent ASEAN meeting, leaders adopted the Kuala Lumpur Declaration. This agreement identifies energy security, food resilience, supply chain stability, and regional connectivity as top priorities. Anwar stressed that the declaration would strengthen ASEAN’s economic resilience and long-term stability.
The ASEAN Power Grid was also a key focus. Officials agreed that greater investment is essential to speed up cross-border energy connections. These links are vital for low-carbon growth and a stable energy transition.
Anwar further urged ASEAN to work with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and China. He argued that partnerships with these regions would create more dependable energy arrangements. Malaysia also backed accelerating the ASEAN Framework on Petroleum Security Agreement (APSA) to improve fuel supply security. The Kuala Lumpur Declaration sets clear goals for ASEAN’s future energy and economic policies. Member states will now push for more funding and collaboration to expand the ASEAN Power Grid. These steps aim to secure energy supplies while supporting sustainable growth across the region.
