Auckland's 2023 Elections: Five New Councillors Join Mayor Brown's Body
Auckland's local body elections have seen significant changes, with five new councillors joining Mayor Wayne Brown's governing body. Former Whau councillor Kerrin Leoni ran only for mayor, with Sarah Paterson-Hamlin taking his council seat. Meanwhile, voter turnout dropped to 29.3% from last year's 35.5%.
Three councillors resigned and did not stand in the 2023 elections, leading to a series of new appointments. Matt Winiata and Daniel Newman have been elected as Manurewa-Papakura ward councillors. Victoria Short will represent the Albany ward, replacing Wayne Walker. Bo Burns joins Maurice Williamson in the Howick ward. John Gillion and Richard Hills have been elected as North Shore councillors.
Nearly half of the special votes cast were discarded due to incorrect or missing declaration details, or outdated enrolment details. A total of 4162 special votes were deemed invalid.
The 2023 Auckland local body elections have resulted in a mix of returning and new faces. With voter turnout decreasing, the city's governance has seen significant changes, setting the stage for the new term.
