B1 highway near Lelm to face months of lane closures for bridge repairs
Lane closures on Federal Highway B1 between Sunstedt and Süpplingen will start on 4 May. The restrictions come as part of a major renovation project on the railway bridge near Lelm station. The work is set to last until late July, though poor weather could push back completion. The €420,000 project will replace bridge parapets, railings, and expansion joints. Crews will also resurface the road and carry out minor repairs to the underside of the structure. Funding for the entire renovation comes from the Federal Republic of Germany.
During construction, the B1 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction, with temporary traffic lights guiding vehicles past the site. Sections of the highway will close one direction at a time to allow work to proceed. Cyclists will also face detours, as the bridge’s bike path shuts temporarily. A nearby access road will serve as the alternative route for riders.
The project aims to improve safety and structural integrity on the busy route. If no weather delays occur, all lanes and the bike path should reopen by the end of July. Drivers and cyclists are advised to plan extra travel time during the works.
