Bavaria freezes teacher hiring despite rising student numbers and workloads
Bavaria's state government has announced it will not create any new teaching positions in 2026. The decision comes despite warnings from educators about growing student numbers and increased workloads. Meanwhile, the Bavarian Philologists' Association (bpv) has launched a new award to highlight teamwork in schools.
The bpv introduced the 'Working Together' Award to recognise strong collaboration between school leaders, staff representatives and teachers. Both long-running projects and new initiatives from the 2025/26 academic year are eligible for nomination.
Criticism of the hiring freeze has grown louder. Benedikt Karl, deputy chair of the bpv, argued that the principle of 'more students require more teachers' is being overlooked. He warned that grammar schools and vocational upper secondary schools will face fewer teaching hours and heavier burdens on staff. Education Minister Anna Stolz's response focuses on using existing resources more efficiently. Her proposed measures rely on current staff and greater local flexibility rather than additional hires. However, no official data on teacher recruitment trends over the past five years—or how they compare to rising pupil numbers—was provided in available reports.
The bpv's new award aims to celebrate cooperation in schools, but concerns remain over staffing shortages. Without new teaching posts, educators in Bavaria's grammar and vocational schools may see further strain. The government's reliance on existing staff and local adjustments has done little to ease the criticism.
