Bavaria's AfD pushes for state takeover of key gas storage sites
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Bavaria is pushing for state control over key gas storage sites. On Friday, the party demanded an assessment of whether the region could take over or buy a major stake in the Wolfersberg facility. Their proposal comes as gas supplies in Bavaria shrink and wholesale prices climb sharply. AfD’s industrial policy spokesman, Oskar Lipp, outlined the demands on Friday. The party wants the Breitbrunn gas storage site transferred from Uniper SE to the Free State of Bavaria. Their goal is to secure full strategic control over its operation, filling levels, and readiness for emergencies.
The Wolfersberg site is also a priority. AfD insists the state should either acquire it outright or take a significant share. By placing both facilities under public ownership, the party aims to guarantee long-term energy security. The calls for nationalisation follow warnings about critically low gas reservoir levels across Bavaria. With wholesale prices rising, the AfD argues that state intervention is necessary to stabilise supplies and prevent future shortages.
If the proposals move forward, Bavaria would gain direct oversight of two major gas storage sites. The shift would mark a significant change in how the region manages its energy reserves. AfD officials claim this step is essential to protect against supply disruptions and price volatility.
