Berlin Candidate Proposes Bold Steps to Protect and Celebrate Jewish Life

Elif Eralp, the Left Party’s lead candidate in Berlin’s upcoming election, has outlined plans to support Jewish life and combat antisemitism. Her policy paper includes proposals for new public holidays, security measures, and cultural initiatives aimed at making Jewish communities safer and more visible in the city. Eralp has called for the introduction of public holidays for major Jewish and Muslim festivals. She believes one holiday for each religion would be a meaningful step. If elected, she intends to explore this idea further.

Her policy paper also focuses on improving security for Jewish spaces. She wants reliable protection for synagogues, cultural centres, and businesses. Additionally, she aims to strengthen existing initiatives that prevent antisemitism, including better documentation and counselling services. To promote Jewish culture, Eralp proposes a scholarship programme for Jewish artists in Berlin. She also supports international exchange opportunities to foster connections. Another plan involves making Jewish festivals more visible in the city, using symbols and lighting in public areas. Eralp has emphasised her commitment to ensuring Jewish life in Berlin can be lived safely and openly. She wants communities to feel secure while expressing their identity on their own terms.

Eralp’s proposals include new holidays, security upgrades, and cultural funding. If implemented, these measures would aim to create a more inclusive and protected environment for Jewish residents. The election will determine whether her plans move forward.
