Berlin U-Bahn racist attack on women and children sparks hate crime probe

Police were alerted to a case of racist insults and threats in Berlin's Schöneberg district yesterday afternoon. According to initial findings, two women, aged 29 and 32, entered the U-Bahn station at Kurfürstendamm in Tiergarten with their six- and nine-year-old children at around 4:50 p.m. When the children attempted to sit next to an unknown man on a bench, he allegedly subjected the group to racist abuse and threats. As a train arrived, the women and their children boarded a different car but exited at Nollendorfplatz. The suspect also disembarked and repeated his remarks. When the women decided to call the police, the man fled the scene. The investigation has been taken over by the Berlin State Criminal Police Office's political extremism unit.
