Berlin's massive EURO 2024™ security operation ends with 19 detentions
Berlin police have completed a large-scale operation tied to UEFA EURO 2024™. Around 2,200 officers were deployed, with support from neighbouring states and the German Armed Forces. The mission included managing public celebrations and maintaining security across the city. The operation saw officers from Brandenburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and the military assisting Berlin’s police force. Their presence aimed to ensure safety during the tournament’s peak moments.
After 11 p.m., a convoy of roughly 100 vehicles filled with German football fans drove along Kurfürstendamm. Despite the late-hour gathering, no major traffic delays occurred. Authorities monitored the event closely to prevent disruptions.
During the operation, police made 19 detentions. Twelve criminal investigations were also launched. These included allegations of grievous and simple bodily harm, trespassing, and a case of drunk driving. The security measures involved a coordinated effort between multiple agencies. With 2,200 personnel on duty, authorities managed public celebrations without serious incident. The investigations and detentions remain under review as part of the operation’s follow-up.
