Major Renovation of Boppard's Rhine Riverbank Wall Begins

With an official press event at the ferry landing on Rheinallee in Boppard, local authorities marked the start of extensive renovation and reinforcement work on the Rhine riverbank wall. At 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2026, a joint on-site ceremony launched the construction project, which aims to ensure the long-term stability of the embankment while sustainably improving its usability and safety for residents and visitors. In attendance were representatives from the planning firm and construction company, Boppard's municipal administration, Deputy Mayor Helmut Zindorf, and district councilor Alexa Bach.

Following the symbolic groundbreaking, officials presented the planned measures in detail. The riverbank wall will undergo comprehensive restoration as part of a multi-phase project. Key tasks include dismantling and renewing damaged sections, replacing individual natural stones, and reworking the mortar joints. Additionally, the wall's structure will be stabilized with anchors, while new foundations and structural reinforcements will be installed. The project also includes optimizing drainage systems.

Another component involves renovating staircases and preparing new installations. Some sections of the wall will be rebuilt and faced with natural stone cladding, while the shoreline will be secured using water construction blocks.

To facilitate work directly on the embankment, construction will take place from the river side. A temporary access road will be built on the Rhine, serving as a work platform and ensuring access to the wall during the construction phase.

Boppard's district councilor, Alexa Bach, emphasized the project's significance for the development of the Rhine promenade and local quality of life: "By renovating the riverbank wall, we are laying the foundation for an attractive Rhine panorama in Boppard—one that invites both residents and visitors to linger and enjoy the space for years to come."

Deputy Mayor Helmut Zindorf highlighted the deliberate timing of the construction start, noting close coordination with local businesses: "Beginning work after the Easter holidays was a conscious decision to minimize disruption to the hospitality and hotel industries during the crucial Easter season, keeping inconveniences as low as possible for everyone involved."

The project will be implemented in multiple phases. The first section, spanning approximately 330 meters from the ferry landing to the Carmelite building, is scheduled for completion by the end of the year. Internal stability will be ensured through cement injections, while around 1,200 ground anchors will be installed into the rear embankment to prevent the wall from tilting toward the river, guaranteeing long-term structural safety.

The gross construction costs for the entire project amount to roughly €3.6 million, excluding additional expenses, with about 80% of eligible costs covered by federal funding through the Integrated Urban Development Concept (ISEK).

As early as next week, the first stones will be delivered to construct the temporary access road from water construction blocks. Following preparatory demolition work, core construction and earthworks are set to begin in midweek. To secure the site, a construction fence with visual and dust protection will be installed along the affected areas, moving progressively with the work zones.

The riverbank wall renovation is closely linked to the comprehensive redesign of Rheinallee, set to begin in mid-August. Both projects are key elements in Boppard's urban development, with the Rheinallee upgrade slated for completion ahead of the 2029 Federal Garden Show. Together, these measures represent a major step toward securing Rhine infrastructure and enhancing public spaces in Boppard.
