Braunschweig probes winter service collapse after Storm Elli chaos
Braunschweig’s city council has launched an investigation into winter service failures after heavy snowfall left many roads and bike paths impassable. The move follows a formal motion by the DIE FRAKTION. BS group, which highlighted severe delays in clearing key routes during Storm Elli. Storm Elli struck the region in mid-February, bringing chaos as trains stopped running, schools closed, and snowdrifts blocked major roads. Despite crews working non-stop, many streets—including Leonhardstraße, Museumstraße, and Helmstedter Straße—remained unplowed or only partially cleared for days.
The February 18 motion criticised ALBA, the city’s service provider, for insufficient staffing and equipment during prolonged snowfall. It noted that bike paths, supposed to be cleared every 19 hours, were often neglected entirely. The motion also pointed out that these delays clash with Braunschweig’s Mobility Development Plan 2035+, which aims to promote walking and cycling as sustainable transport options. City officials acknowledged the shortcomings, admitting that many streets were plowed far less frequently than required. The council has now approved a full review of ALBA’s resources to ensure safer conditions for pedestrians and cyclists in future winters.
The investigation will examine whether ALBA’s current personnel and technical resources meet the city’s winter maintenance needs. If changes are required, the findings could lead to adjustments in staffing, equipment, or clearance schedules before the next snow season.
