Canada and India Reset Ties Under Carney’s Pragmatic Diplomacy at G7
Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to the G7 Summit in June marked a significant step in mending diplomatic ties between Canada and India. He met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, instructing their governments to stabilise their relationship. This meeting signals a renewal of diplomatic engagement following a series of high-level exchanges since Carney took office earlier this year.
India, though not a G7 member, is a regular invitee to the gathering. The two leaders directed their governments to work together, focusing on areas like clean energy, critical minerals, and AI. This pragmatic approach is a shift from the strained relations under former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was criticised for Ottawa's perceived tolerance of pro-Khalistan activities on Canadian soil.
Diplomatic activity has indeed accelerated since Carney's leadership. New Delhi and Ottawa reinstated their high commissioners in August, restoring full diplomatic representation after a year of tension. This was followed by meetings between Modi, Jaishankar, and Anand, as well as dialogues between national security advisers. Upcoming visits include Dr S Jaishankar's trip to Canada on November 11-12, 2023, and Carney's attendance at the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Ontario's Niagara Region.
Carney's leadership has brought a more pragmatic tone to Canada-India relations, prioritising economic collaboration and strategic engagement. With a series of high-level visits and dialogues, both countries are working towards stabilising and strengthening their diplomatic ties.
