Cannes 2024: Einbinder and Almodóvar break Hollywood's Gaza silence
At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, voices from the entertainment world continue to speak out about Gaza. Hannah Einbinder, star of Teenage Sex and Death and Camp Miasma, has repeatedly used her platform to criticise Hollywood’s silence. Meanwhile, filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar has also raised concerns about political inaction in the U.S., questioning the country’s democratic standing amid the conflict. Einbinder’s activism has been visible for months. At last year’s Emmys, her acceptance speech included the words Free Palestine, which quickly spread online. More recently, she appeared on Zeteo’s Beyond Israelism podcast, released on May 12, where she dismissed claims of ignorance about Gaza as naive. At Cannes, she again called out Hollywood’s reluctance to address the war.
Almodóvar, a veteran director, has made similar criticisms. He noted the lack of protests at the Oscars, both against the conflict and former President Trump. In interviews, he described the U.S. as undemocratic, pointing to what he sees as a paradox: a system that elected a leader he views as totalitarian. Like Einbinder, he has directly questioned why Hollywood remains largely silent on Gaza.
Both figures have used high-profile events to push for greater awareness. Einbinder’s comments at Cannes and on podcasts keep the issue in public discussion. Almodóvar’s remarks highlight broader concerns about political accountability in the U.S. Their statements add to growing calls for the film industry to take a clearer stance.
