CDU MP Tauschwitz to rise to party leadership - CDU nominates Vivian Tauschwitz for federal leadership role ahead of Stuttgart conference

State CDU Nominates Vivian Tauschwitz for Federal Executive Board—Her Policy Priorities

Vivian Tauschwitz, a Lower Saxony CDU member of the Bundestag and former Bundeswehr officer, has been nominated by her state party to join the federal executive board of Germany's Christian Democratic Union. "I want to actively contribute my defense policy expertise to the work of the federal leadership," the 31-year-old told the German Press Agency. At the CDU's federal party conference, which begins Friday in Stuttgart, she is set to be elected as an executive board member. The state association had already put her forward in January.

Tauschwitz emphasized that grassroots experience is crucial for advancing security policy. Lower Saxony, she noted, plays a concrete role in strengthening Germany's defense capabilities—through military bases and critical transport infrastructure. "Security policy today is a cross-cutting challenge," the CDU politician said.

From Military Service to Party Leadership

Tauschwitz has served in the Bundestag since 2025 and sits on the Defense Committee. Before entering parliament, she served in the Bundeswehr, including with the army's reconnaissance forces, and completed a foreign deployment to Mali in 2023. She represents the Rotenburg I–Heidekreis district, which is also home to Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil (SPD).

Her election to the federal board, she said, will "visibly strengthen Lower Saxony's voice within the national party." In last year's formation of the federal government, the state association was left without a cabinet post.

On policy, Tauschwitz focuses on secure energy supply, economic stability, food security, and strengthening rural areas. She sees Germany facing a period of major economic and geopolitical transformation. "Security, economic strength, and social cohesion must once again be more closely intertwined," she argued.

State party leader Sebastian Lechner described Tauschwitz as embodying "defense policy expertise, international experience, and a new generation of political responsibility."

Alongside Tauschwitz, Lower Saxony's Silvia Breher, another Bundestag member, is running again for deputy federal chairwoman, while Lechner is also expected to retain his seat on the presidium. Parliamentary group manager Carina Hermann has again been proposed as an executive board member. The CDU's federal board comprises 40 elected members and 16 advisory members. Lower Saxony is one of the party's three largest state associations.
