Chiefs, Bears, and Browns to Abandon Iconic Stadiums in $8.8B NFL Relocation Push
Three NFL teams—the Chiefs, Bears, and Browns—are planning to leave their current stadiums for new venues. The combined cost of the proposed projects could reach $8.8 billion. League commissioner Roger Goodell has given approval for each team’s relocation plans.
The moves come as the NFL pushes for further growth, both in the US and abroad. With ambitions to hit $25 billion in annual revenue, the league is also eyeing international expansion, including an 18th regular-season game overseas. The Bears have already ruled out staying in downtown Chicago. Instead, they are weighing options in Arlington Heights, Illinois, or Hammond, Indiana. If Hammond is chosen, the team would become the latest NFL franchise to cross state lines.
The Chiefs are set to leave Missouri for Kansas, while the Browns plan to move from downtown Cleveland to suburban Brook Park. The NFL is backing these relocations, partly because modern stadiums with roofs improve chances of hosting the Super Bowl.
The league’s push for new venues comes despite many existing stadiums still being world-class by global standards. Yet the NFL’s financial targets—including another billion in revenue—are driving teams to seek upgraded facilities. At the same time, the league continues its global expansion, aiming to grow its audience in a streaming-dominated sports market.
Fans of the Browns and Bears, known for their loyalty, have endured years of frustration. Their teams’ current stadiums have long been criticised, adding to supporters’ dissatisfaction. The three new stadiums would mark a major shift for the Chiefs, Bears, and Browns. Each relocation reflects the NFL’s broader strategy of revenue growth and global reach. Meanwhile, fans in Chicago and Cleveland will watch closely as their teams prepare to leave familiar grounds behind.
