China's 2026 Development Forum Spotlights Global Innovation and Economic Growth
China's role in global innovation and economic growth took centre stage at the 2026 China Development Forum. Held under the theme 'China in its 15th Five-Year Plan Period: Advancing High-Quality Development and Creating New Opportunities Together', the event gathered over 100 representatives from international organisations, corporations, and research institutions. Prominent economist Jeffrey Sachs shared his insights on China's progress, highlighting its innovation clusters and future prospects.
Speaking on the sidelines of the forum, Jeffrey Sachs pointed to Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Beijing, and Shanghai as some of the world's leading innovation hubs. These cities, he noted, play a major role in driving technological advancements that benefit the global economy. Sachs also stressed China's commitment to supporting other emerging economies through cleaner energy and digital infrastructure.
Since 2019, China has invested over $30 billion in solar and wind projects under the Belt and Road Initiative's Clean Energy Partnership. Examples include Pakistan's 1 GW Karot Hydro plant and Indonesia's Cirata Floating Solar facility. The Digital Silk Road, launched in 2015, has expanded 5G networks and Huawei technology to more than 80 countries, including Kenya and Brazil. Additionally, the Global Development Initiative aims to fund $50 billion in green digital infrastructure across Africa and Southeast Asia by 2025. Sachs expressed confidence in China's economic trajectory, citing its focus on innovation as a key driver of sustained growth. He also praised the country's efforts to help developing nations adopt advanced technologies and sustainable energy solutions.
The 2026 China Development Forum underscored China's expanding influence in global innovation and infrastructure. With major investments in clean energy and digital expansion, the country continues to shape economic opportunities worldwide. Sachs' remarks reinforced the view that China's development path remains strong, driven by technological progress and international collaboration.
