CIS Unions Rally on May Day to Defend Labor Rights and Solidarity

Trade unions across the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) marked International Workers’ Day with rallies, clean-up drives, and workplace assemblies. The events highlighted the ongoing role of unions in defending labour rights and improving working conditions. In Minsk, a high-profile gathering drew government officials and union leaders for a day of solidarity. The May Day celebrations in Minsk began with a floral tribute at the ‘Minsk – Hero City’ monument. Attendees included representatives from labour collectives, the Belarusian Presidential Administration, and the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus. The ceremony set the tone for a day of public demonstrations.

Viktor Pinsky, Secretary General of the All-Russian Confederation of Trade Unions and a State Duma deputy, spoke at the rally. He outlined key demands: job security, fair wages, workplace safety, and social protections for those unable to work. His speech underscored the shared priorities of unions across the CIS. Across the region, unions organised marathons, community clean-ups, and workplace meetings. These activities reflected a broader commitment to workers’ well-being, particularly for older employees and working women. The Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus, in particular, has focused on labour protections and improving living standards. Trade unions remain a vital part of civil society in the CIS. Their unified stance on workers’ rights continues to strengthen cross-border solidarity. May Day events served as a visible reminder of their influence and reach.

The celebrations reinforced the role of unions in advocating for fair treatment and better conditions. From public rallies to workplace initiatives, the events demonstrated their ongoing relevance. For workers in the CIS, the day was both a commemoration and a call for continued progress.
