Cottbus Tops Germany's Economic Growth as Fastest-Rising City
A new study has named Cottbus the fastest-growing city in Germany for economic progress. The findings place it ahead of all other urban areas over the past two years. Local officials now see the results as confirmation of their current strategies.
The city topped the dynamism ranking in a report by IW Consult. Researchers measured economic development between 2021 and 2023. Cottbus outperformed competitors in growth, innovation, and structural change.
Mayor Tobias Schick called the ranking a clear signal to stay on course. He pointed to the city’s focus on sustainability and modern industries as key drivers. Cottbus has aligned its economy with green priorities, including hydrogen production, electrification, and renewable energy. As the main urban centre in Lusatia, Cottbus also serves as a hub for education and research. It hosts Brandenburg’s only technical university, reinforcing its role in regional innovation. The study highlights how these strengths have boosted its economic momentum.
The report positions Cottbus as a leader in Germany’s shifting economic landscape. Its focus on green technology and knowledge-based industries has delivered measurable growth. City leaders now aim to build on this progress in the years ahead.
