Cumberland County’s tight commissioner race pits Democrats against Republicans in fierce battle
In a tight race for two Cumberland County Commissioner seats, a Democrat and a Republican are neck and neck, with the result too close to call. The contest has seen a mix of familiar faces and new contenders vying for the positions.
Douglas Albrecht, a former Vineland councilman, and Victoria Lods, who was elected in 2022, are currently leading for the Republican Party. Albrecht, who was first elected to the county commission in 2019, is seeking to retain his seat. Lods, on the other hand, is looking to solidify the Republican majority on the board, which currently stands at 6-1.
On the Democratic side, John Capizola and Yolanda Garcia Balicki are hot on their heels. Capizola, who previously served as an interim county commissioner in 2023, is hoping to secure a full term this time around. Garcia Balicki, who challenged State Sen. Michael Testa Jr. in 2021, is also eager to make her mark on the county commission.
The Democratic Party in Cumberland County has been grappling with internal divisions for several years. Capizola and Garcia Balicki are aligned with the faction led by county Democratic Chair Kevin McCann. However, there is no information available about a Democratic candidate for the County Commissioner position in 2024 who is connected to McCann.
The race for Cumberland County Commissioner seats is shaping up to be a close one, with Republicans and Democrats both fielding experienced candidates. The outcome will not only determine the political balance of the county but also reflect the ongoing dynamics within the Democratic Party.
