DACH Entrepreneurs Reveal Successes and Struggles in New Survey
A new survey has revealed key trends among entrepreneurs in the DACH region, showing both the rewards and challenges of starting a business. The findings highlight how many have improved their lives through self-employment, though obstacles like customer relations and financial strain remain common. Most business owners are millennials or from Generation X, with nearly half seeking guidance from mentors early on. The survey shows that 85% of respondents feel their lives have improved since launching their ventures. Flexibility and passion drive many, with 31% starting businesses to pursue long-held interests and 18% seeking greater control over their schedules. Another 16% viewed entrepreneurship as a fresh professional start.
Nearly half of the business owners (46%) have turned to experienced mentors for advice. Despite this, early challenges persist: 31% struggled with online marketing, while 25% faced tax-related difficulties. A lack of expertise in business planning and management also proved a hurdle for 24%. When it comes to spending, entrepreneurs prioritise equipment (20%), inventory (13%), and online marketing (13%) for their initial investments. Over time, many are now focusing on expanding their digital presence, with 16% reinvesting in online marketing and 13% in new product development. Customer relations remain the biggest ongoing challenge, cited by 48% of respondents, followed by financial issues (26%) and workforce management (23%). The majority of entrepreneurs fall into two age groups: millennials (36%) and Generation X (34%). Education levels vary, but 61% hold a secondary school or vocational qualification. Nearly half (40%) have been running their businesses for less than five years.
The survey paints a picture of a determined but cautious entrepreneurial landscape in the DACH region. While many report personal and professional gains, challenges like customer engagement and financial pressures continue to shape their journeys. With mentorship playing a key role and digital growth a top priority, the findings suggest a focus on both stability and innovation among new business owners.
