Denis Boltut freed after six years in Belarus political prisoner case
Denis Boltut was detained on September 25, 2020, amid allegations of involvement in mass unrest. Less than a month later, human rights activists declared him a political prisoner. His case led to a six-year prison sentence, which he has now completed. Boltut's legal troubles began with suspicions of participating in mass unrest. Authorities formally charged him under Part 1 of Article 342 of the Criminal Code. Later, additional charges under Article 293 and Article 364 were added to his case.
On July 2, 2021, a court convicted him and handed down a six-year prison term. He served his sentence in Penal Colony No. 2 in Bobruisk. Throughout his imprisonment, no major human rights groups or international bodies publicly campaigned for his release.
His classification as a political prisoner came on October 21, 2020, shortly after his arrest. Despite this designation, his case received limited public attention in recent years. Boltut has now fulfilled his six-year sentence. His release follows a period of detention that began with accusations tied to unrest. No further legal proceedings against him have been reported.
