Drunk driver crashes Nissan Micra into truck on Germany's A2 motorway

A 36-year-old man from Viersen crashed his Nissan Micra into a tractor-trailer on the A2 motorway near Rheda-Wiedenbrück. The collision happened late at night, leaving the driver severely injured and under suspicion of drink-driving. The incident took place at around 11:05 p.m. on the A2 towards Hanover, between the Rheda-Wiedenbrück and Gütersloh exits. The man, holding German-Kyrgyz citizenship, was driving the Nissan Micra when it skidded to the right, hit the guardrail, and stopped on the shoulder after colliding with the lorry.

The truck driver, a 54-year-old Polish man, told police he had stayed in the right lane throughout. Emergency services rushed the car driver to hospital with serious injuries. His vehicle was later towed from the scene. Initially, the man claimed he had only drunk one beer before the crash. However, a preliminary breath test showed alcohol in his system, leading officers to take two blood samples. At the hospital, he admitted to consuming four cans of beer and a small bottle of vodka. The estimated cost of property damage from the crash is around €16,200.

The injured driver remains in hospital while investigations continue. Police are examining the blood samples to confirm his blood alcohol level. The collision caused significant damage and disrupted traffic on the A2 motorway.
