Düsseldorf Couple Arrested After Shoplifting Spiral Reveals Stolen Cash and Jewellery
A couple from Düsseldorf faces serious charges after a shoplifting incident escalated into a wider investigation. Police were called to a supermarket in the Eller district on Monday evening, where a woman attempted to leave with stolen goods while accompanied by her young child. The subsequent search of their home and vehicle uncovered cash, jewellery, and other items suspected to be stolen.
The incident began at 9:30 PM on May 5, 2026, when supermarket employees spotted a 33-year-old German woman shoplifting. She was with her two-year-old son at the time. When confronted by a store detective, she threatened violence from her husband if allowed to leave.
Her 32-year-old husband arrived shortly after police were called. Officers quickly established that both had outstanding arrest warrants. A search of the couple revealed a four-figure sum of cash in the man’s shoulder bag, which he could not explain. Further searches turned up more suspected stolen property. Their vehicle contained gold and silver jewellery, silverware, clothing, and watches. At their home, police found additional cash and what appeared to be more stolen goods. The woman’s bag also held a slip of paper listing names and contact details of elderly residents in Düsseldorf. The pair now face charges of extortion with violence and residential burglary. The man was additionally reported for driving without a licence.
Both suspects remain in custody as investigations continue. The discovery of cash, jewellery, and personal details suggests a broader pattern of criminal activity. Authorities are examining whether the couple targeted elderly individuals in the area.
