Erkner's new covered bike parking boosts sustainable commuting in Brandenburg
Erkner (dpa/bb) — Brandenburg's state government is pushing ahead with the expansion of bicycle parking facilities at train stations in Berlin's commuter belt. A new covered bike parking area with 103 spaces was inaugurated in Erkner (Oder-Spree district) on Tuesday afternoon, the Transport Ministry announced. The facility also includes six racks designed for cargo bikes.
"Ride your bike to the station, park it, and go—climate-friendly mobility must be simple and flexible. That's why we support practical solutions in both urban and rural areas," Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) said in a statement. "Demand has steadily increased in Erkner over recent years, and the more commuters and trainees we can shift to rail, the better," added his Brandenburg counterpart, Robert Crumbach (SPD).
For several years, the state has been expanding park-and-ride facilities at train stations and stops to make it easier for drivers to switch to public transport. In Berlin's commuter belt, Brandenburg has accelerated a program to build new modular bike parking structures.
