Espinho PSD election in turmoil as court orders vote rerun
A local election dispute in Espinho has led to calls for a vote rerun. Ricardo Sousa won the PSD branch leadership by just two votes, but a court later ruled the count was flawed. Now, Sousa and his rival, Paulo Leite, are challenging the decision to repeat the process.
The elections for Espinho’s PSD branch took place nearly two months ago. Ricardo Sousa secured victory with a narrow lead of two votes over Paulo Leite. However, the district jurisdiction later found errors in the ballot count and ordered a new vote.
Sousa and Leite have both appealed the ruling. They criticised Prime Minister Luís Montenegro for not consulting local officials before the decision was made.
The dispute leaves the branch leadership in limbo. If the appeal fails, a rerun will take place. The outcome will determine who leads Espinho’s PSD in the coming term.
